The ENGAGE committee brings together partners from the community such as users, patients, individuals with real-life expertise, and representatives of community organizations who have developed varied expertise in the areas of social exclusion, participatory or partnership research, care trajectories, and health inequities.
The committee — active since 2018 — contributes to the mission of the Bureau of Social Responsibility (BRS) in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Sherbrooke (UDS). Its objective is to advance the search for partnerships with a variety of community partners in order to improve equity within the health-care system.
Achievements
Our achievements have focused on overcoming the current challenges related to inclusion and on avoiding the instrumentalization of people experiencing social exclusion. To this end, we adopted a co-construction approach with three academic researchers to produce a guide to inclusive research practices and a series of four podcasts that offer concrete tools to support the involvement of the socially excluded in research. The guide and podcasts address a variety of issues, including cultural humility, benevolence, and the fight against prejudice.
